Vanity cabinets contain many parts. They can be categorized as follows: structural components like the frame and face, doors and drawers, countertops and backsplashes, and hinges, knobs, and hardware.

When it comes to cabinets, bathroom vanities are slightly different from kitchen cabinets. They can vary in depth and size, but the basic parts are the same as most other cabinetry.

Let’s dive into the parts that make up a vanity cabinet and their purposes!

Primary Structure

This is the 'box' of the cabinet. It includes:

The Base

This is the foundation of the cabinet, which keeps the bottom of the cabinet raised from the floor by approximately three to four inches.

The Frame and Face

The frame is composed of solid wood covered by side and back panels for a finished look. The front of the cabinet may or may not have a face (the space in between doors and drawers). Some cabinets are faceless and only have a door and drawers with no spacing.

The Countertop

This is the top that fits onto the cabinet. Many cabinets are purchased separately from the countertop, as the countertop may be made of any material. For a bathroom vanity, a hole will be cut where the sink will be placed.

Doors, Drawers, and Storage

Many bathroom vanities have shelving installed for easier organization. In addition, you’ll find these parts:

Cabinet Doors

These come in a variety of styles and may or may not have spacing between them. Additionally, doors may come in a variety of styles such as solid, carved, or glass-fronted.

Doors can be single or double. Many double-door cabinets will have one door open in each direction.

Drawers

Drawers are typically placed above the doors. Alternatively, large vanities may have several drawers stacked on top of each other with doors and storage space to either side.

Drawers also vary in depth and height. Some are larger to accommodate folded towels, while others are shallow and just used to store toiletries. The drawer interior is typically the same material as the cabinet interior, and the drawer face can be customized to match the doors

Optional Accessories and Hardware

A vanity can have several optional parts added to it. Additionally, several types of hardware can be customized, such as:

Backsplashes

This part is added at the back to prevent water from damaging walls. While not strictly necessary, many homeowners opt to add it for additional protection.

Drawer Organizers

These can be added to the drawer’s interior to aid in organizing toiletries.

Handles and Knobs and Hinges

Available in a wide variety of styles, materials, and colors, these help to add flair to a vanity and make the fine details stand out. For those with cabinet hinges in need of some TLC, be sure to learn how to fix bathroom cabinet hinges.
